A six-armed metal robot with cameras and custom joints might look ready for a range of tasks. The Hexa-Bouncer has a far narrower job: bounce a ping-pong ball. In a Popular Science report, Mack DeGeurin describes how hobbyist T-Kuhn built the machine around that single challenge.

The design began in a simulated environment before being made with a CNC milling machine. Its custom-built joints let the robot rise, fall and tilt, and bob up and down while tracing a circle. Two cameras, positioned 120 degrees apart, track the ball and send its position to a computer over USB. The computer builds a three-dimensional picture of the scene, then calculates when and at what angle the paddle should hit. The report says these steps happen in a fraction of a second.

A video described in the report shows the robot following a ball held above it, moving in sync with a person’s hand. When the ball is released, the machine reacts and sends it back into the air, making small adjustments as it bounces. In the segment, it does not miss. But the video does not establish how long the robot can sustain the performance: after several bounces, it eases off its swing and the ball begins bouncing lower.

That qualification matters. The clip offers a view of the machine coordinating cameras, computer calculations and physical movement, but it does not show how consistently it performs across longer runs or other conditions. The report leaves the robot’s maximum juggling time unclear. Its demonstrated feat is still a specific one: keeping a ball aloft in the sequence shown, not handling a broad range of tasks.

Kuhn had previously made the Octo-Bouncer, a related machine that uses a four-sided flat plate to keep a ping-pong ball bouncing. DeGeurin presents the Hexa-Bouncer as part of a series of machines built around the same seemingly impractical premise. For Kuhn, the design puzzle is part of the point. The project suggests that engineering can be pursued for the challenge of making a complicated mechanism work, even when its purpose is simply to bounce a ball.
